Types and Techniques: Commercial Concrete Repair

Cracks in concrete don’t just look ugly; they are also irritating and in extreme cases can cause injury if big enough. Concrete is widely used to build commercial buildings, bridges, roads, extra because it is strong and durable.
But that does not mean it’s going to last forever.
At some point, concrete may develop cracks that need to be refilled using appropriate concrete repair methods before they develop into big holes that may cause buildings, bridges or any concrete infrastructure to collapse.
Concrete may crack due to various factors such as adding excess water in the concrete mix during construction causing it to shrink and crack, or through rapid drying of concrete due to lack of enough water to change it from liquid to solid state.
Also, foundations poured in winter suffer more cracks because they are not heated hence don’t properly dry up. Nevertheless, having cracked concrete does not mean reconstruction as there are various ways to repair cracked concrete.

Concrete Repair Methods

Before selecting the method for use to repair concrete cracks, the cause of the damage should first be determined so you can decide which of the various concrete repair methods to use.

⦁ Epoxy injections

With epoxy injections, expansion and contraction cycles in the wall during movement are eliminated because epoxies weld the crack together with a bond strength higher than that for concrete. It can be used to repair cracks in dams, bridges, buildings, among others. However, if the cause of the cracking is not corrected, more cracking will seemingly reoccur.
Epoxy injections are most effective for filling small cracks.

⦁ Polyurethane injection

This method is more appropriate for wider cracks that are caused by water in the concrete. Urethanes react with moisture in the crack to form a foam that expands inside the wall to fill the crack. Urethane foams have a lower bond strength than concrete, but less polyurethane is needed to fill a crack making it less expensive.

⦁ Dry packing

This method is used to fill concrete cracks that are deep and not wide. A dry pack that is stiff cement-sand mortar is used to fill the cracks because it contains enough water to produce a sticky substance used to fill the crack.

⦁ Removal and replacement

If the concrete is too damaged, its damaged portions are removed and replaced with freshly poured concrete.
Other concrete repair methods such as concrete overlays with micro-toppings and concrete crack repair by stitch are commercially used to repair cracks in buildings, dams, bridges, extra.
However, concrete cracks have become a common problem, but there are many construction companies at hand to help, who can use simple concrete repair methods such as epoxy and polyurethane injections to repair cracks since reconstruction is not an option.
These construction companies are always ready to help, and whether it is a small floor repair or parking lot, they get the job done on time and within the budget.
